Shaunův život se již delší dobu ubírá odnikud nikam. Celé dny tráví v hospodě Winchester s nejlepším přítelem Edem, hádá se s matkou a svou přítelkyni Liz přehlíží jako širé lány. Když jej Liz pošle k vodě, zacloumá to s ním tak, že se rozhodne získat srdce své dívky zpět, napravit ve vztahu s matkou, co se dá, a vůbec ke svému životu přistupovat zodpovědněji. Jenže to ještě není konec… Mrtví se v hrobech nudí a mají nezřízenou chuť na čerstvé maso. Shaun zrovna prochází údobím velkých změn a tato nově vzniklá situace pro něj není žádnou velkou překážkou. Tváří v tvář epidemii po zuby ozbrojených zombií se Shaun spřáhne s Edem, aby mu byl po ruce při záchraně matky a Liz. A když už to musí být, tak i nevlastního otce a Liziných kamarádů Davida a Dianne. Cílem je probít se do nejbezpečnějšího místa na světě – hospody Winchester.
