On the night of Lucia's kidnapping, the Unnamed revisits his life. Many years earlier a caravan of Andalusian gypsies arrived at the gates of Milan. Among these were Esteban with his mother, his fiancée Maria Dolores, and the latter's sister, Carmencita who, in love with Esteban, resorts to every means to hinder the wedding.
