Životopisný film zachycuje kariéru legendárního odborářského vůdce, který byl ve třicátých až šedesátých letech výraznou osobností americké politické scény. Vzpurný, nápaditý a charismatický James R. Hoffa vybudoval nesmírně silný odborový svaz, jehož základ tvořili řidiči kamiónů. Politický a společenský vzestup Hoffy byl ovšem provázen i temnými, neobjasněnými stránkami, především spojením s podsvětím. Proto byl Hoffa také odsouzen do vězení. Po předčasném návratu z výkonu trestu se pokoušel získat zpět ztracenou moc. 30. července 1975 zmizel za dosud neobjasněných okolností...
